WAR ON THE BRAIN | ROMEO ALAEFF

These drawings are a study on subconscious bias. In a traditional Rorschach Test, the mental image projected on to a so-called “neutral” ink-blot is meant to reveal something hidden to the viewer’s conscious mind. Challenging this theory, these Rorschachs are not meant to be neutral – hidden within them are images from art history, political cartoons, film, news media and propaganda. In this context, it becomes apparent that the viewer can only readily see the images which have already been previously consumed via these media in their lifetime. Those who have had exposure to news media from Vietnam, for example, will see a famous execution as obvious while another might only make out a generic human figure, or nothing at all. The work intentionally plays at the intersection between what is actually placed in the image and what the viewer is predisposed to see or construct. In an attempt to uncover the ways in which cultural biases influence the way in which we experience the world, the project is a meditation on the tension that arises when what is seen or known about the world is cued by bias, or when it is challenged by contradiction or an opposing view. Violence and war are often the consequence of this tension.

Each drawing focuses on a particular moment in history in which the hero or event contains the potential for duplicitous readings. Vietnam, Marie Antoinette, Muhammad Ali, The Revelation of the Apocalypse, and William Wallace (Braveheart) are some of the subjects used to explore the ways in which the media – from mythic tales to journalistic photos – are employed to influence public opinion and establish “common knowledge.”
