Romeo Alaeff | The Evolution of Despair

Original Pen & Ink Drawing

Year, 2010
9 x 12 x .5 in. (25.4 x 25.4 x 1.27 cm.) Framed.

From the book, “I’ll be Dead by the Time You Read This, The Existential Life of Animals” (Penguin/Plume, 2011)

“One of the marvels of the book is that the more you read, the more you smile…” – Oprah.com

“I love Romeo’s animals. I’m looking at one right now-a stoic little eagle saying ‘Don’t pity me.’ Personally, like being pitied, but I appreciate the sentiment.” – Moby

“Every morning, next to my bathroom mirror, Romeo’s anxious goldfish reminds me of the fullness of existence; for to be afraid of dying is not to lead a fearful life, but one so precious you don’t want to lose it.” — Christian Rattemeyer, Associate Curator, Museum of Modern Art

One of the original pen & ink drawing featured in the book, “I’ll be Dead by the Time You Read This, The Existential Life of Animals” (Penguin/Plume 2011). The precise line-work was achieved using the smallest Radiograph nibs (0.13 & 0.18 mm.) applied to Denril, a polypropylene vellum material used to prevent nib clogging. Each drawing took between 25-100 hours to complete.

Materials | Borden & Riley Denril and Acid-free Ink

Book Review | “Fraught with doubts, broken dreams, deep desires, and heartbreaking realizations, rather than poke fun at the human condition, I’ll Be Dead unwittingly epitomizes the strength and courage that is necessary to the face the challenges that life often presents.” – New York Journal of Books

Note | Color reproduction varies from monitor to monitor. Work sold in a temporary simple plastic and glass frame for protection. Signature on Frame. Comes with a Certificate of Authenticity.
