Project Text | A study on subconscious bias, the project examines the ways in which “common knowledge” is cued by prejudice or challenged by contradictory world-views. Focusing on the potential for multiple/duplicitous readings of history, “War on the Brain” investigates the biases and blind-spots that influence the evolution of one’s world-view. Using images from art history and the media, as well as “universal” symbols, cultural icons and random noise, the work plays at the intersection between what is actually in the image and what the viewer is predisposed to see. The project is a meditation on the conflicts that arise when what is seen or known is challenged by contradiction, paradox or an opposing view.
“What justification is there for assuming that any given interpretation of an inkblot does not issue from a part of the self bent on deceiving others, or on deceiving oneself for that matter?” – Skeptic’s Dictionary
